Transport Costs and North-South Trade

چکیده

We develop a simple two country model of international trade that assumes that there is a fixed cost associated with transporting goods across national boundaries. We show that this leads to multiple equilibria that can be Pareto-ranked. One of these equilibria is autarky. We argue that the existence of fixed costs in transport can help explain the low volume of North-South trade. ∗GREQAM, University of Aix-Marseille II, email: [email protected] †Department of Economics, University of Iowa, email: [email protected]

Skill Differentiation and Income Disparity in a Decentralized Matching Model of North-south Trade

This paper develops a North-South trade model in which the South produces food and the North produces both food and a high-tech good. Food production is undertaken by unskilled workers while the high-tech product is made only by horizontally differentiated skilled workers. Due to the possibility of a peergroup effect, we allow the unskilled workers in the North to be equally or more productive ...

Small State Regional Cooperation, South-South and South-North Migration, and International Trade

Small State Regional Cooperation, South-South and South-North Migration, and International Trade This paper provides a different basis than previous analyses for regional bloc formation and regional migration. Due to low bargaining power and fixed costs, small states face a severe disadvantage in negotiations with the rest of the world and might benefit by forming a regional bloc. The study a) ...

Patterns and Determinants of International Trade Costs in the Food

This paper documents patterns in international trade costs in processed foods for a large cross-section of developing and developed countries, during the 1976-2000 period. A trade costs index is inferred from a micro-founded gravity equation that incorporates bilateral ‘iceberg’ trade costs. For 2000, the weighted average tariff equivalent of trade costs ranges from 73% for the North to 134% fo...

A Gravity Study of the Sectoral Trade Impact of Labour Migration in an Enlarged EU1

In this paper we estimate a sectoral gravity model for trade between three regional blocs of the enlarged EU that we defined as North (wealthiest EU), South (Greece, Portugal and Spain) and East (acceding Central and Eastern European countries). The estimation results show the need to incorporate trade theories based on both endowments and scale economies in the presence of transport costs. We ...

Does globalization foster economic growth?

This article focuses on two distinct faces of globalization: the decrease in trade costs of goods and the decline of affiliation costs of joint ventures by foreign firms with local firms. The decrease of affiliation costs drives relocation of firms from the North to the South. When the market size of the North is relatively small (resp. large), the growth rate monotonously decreases (resp. firs...
